Prince Henry of WALES? Are you sure that’s the proper address? Unless I’m mistaken, the title of Prince of Wales belongs exclusively to his father.
No, you are mistaken. The Prince of Wales is referred to as “Charles, The Prince of Wales”. However, the children of the Prince of Wales are referred to as “Prince/Princess N. OF WALES” because it is the title of their father. This is the case until they may receive a title of their own. So, The Duke of Cambridge before his marriage was referred to as “Prince William of Wales”. At his marriage when he was created Duke of Cambridge that stopped. Similarly his children are referred to now as “Prince George of Cambridge” and “Princess Charlotte of Cambridge” because it reflects the title of their father. When she was a child the present Queen was referred to as “Princess Elizabeth of York” because her father was the Duke of York before becoming King.
Spot on, Father Guy. And thanks for the elegant depiction of the arms.
“Non-Catholic”?! Prince Henry prays, as do all Anglicans: “I believe in one Catholic and Apostolic Church …”. We just do not happen to accept the premise that the universal church is ruled from the Vatican.
No, he doesn’t. The words of the Nicene Creed are, “I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic church…” In that case catholic is with a small “c” and it refers to the universality of the Church. However, Catholic, with a capital “C” always and everywhere refers to the Holy Roman Church, all those who are in communion with the Roman Pontiff.
It’s very nice that many Anglicans think of themselves as Catholics too but they aren’t. Henry VIII took care of that when he broke with Rome and declared himself Supreme Head of the Church in England. If recitation of the Nicene Creed made one Catholic then Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, etc. would all be Catholics too. In fact, Prince Henry’s grandmother, at her coronation, swore to maintain, “…the Protestant Reformed religion…” thus pretty much swearing not to be Catholic.
No one thinks the Church is ruled from the Vatican. The Head of the Church is CHRIST who is in heaven. The Vatican is merely the residence of the Pope, Christ’s Vicar on Earth.
