Thanks to the tireless efforts of one of my intrepid readers we see below the coat of arms of Edward Bernard Scharfenberger who will be ordained and installed today as the 10th Bishop of Albany, NY. The design of his arms is simple and clear and borrows from the arms associated with a family called Scharfenberger (the mountains). The star of David represents his mother, Miriam, who was of Jewish origin. The wavy lines allude to the various rivers associated with the bishop’s life and the golden feather in base is an allusion to both the Holy Spirit and the native Americans of upstate NY. My criticism would have to do mostly with this particular artistic rendering and so, I will refrain from commenting further as that is often simply a matter of taste. The beaver holding a crozier in the arms of the see come from the fact that the original name of Albany was “Beaverwyck” as it was a major outpost on the trade route for traders. It holds a crozier as an indication of Albany as the seat of a bishop. The crescent alludes to the Immaculate Conception, the titular of the cathedral church.
In my opinion here is the same problem as with the coat of arms of mgr. Ochoa on becoming bishop of Fresno: In base there was not much wrong, but some artist knowing more from logo’s and digital drawing drawed a logo-like picture with very clear blue, but white enlightened and with undesirable brown.
Besides that:
– I thougt that always the entire figure of beaver and staff + crescent are silver on blue. Why a brown beaver, unnecessary breaking traditions?
– In the personal part we see three blue fields.
– The green-on-blue for the mountains is here not necessary. Why not golden (light) for the upper field?
– The centre field could be silver so that the Magen David could be blue, as well as the two pallets wavy.
– And than the basic field could stay as it is.
My conclusion: not so bad as some other recent designs, but it coud have been better.
The beaver is usually depicted as silver. However, even the diocese itself sometimes shows the beaver as Proper; that is, brown. This stems from the continued misunderstanding by the ignorant that heraldry doesn’t employ realistic depictions. They always seek to correct what they think is a “mistake” and, in so doing, make it worse.
HERE IS THE OFFICIAL BLAZON:
In the Middle Ages, the Church adopted heraldry as a means of approving and authenticating documents as well as indicating ownership of church buildings. Bishops used their Coats of Arms to decorate their episcopal thrones, vestments, coaches and tableware.
Today, the bishop’s arms are used in official correspondence and the sealing of important documents. Arms are designed to reflect personal history or things that are important to him. As a diocesan bishop, Bishop Edward Scharfenberger joins his personal coat of arms to that of the Diocese of Albany, N.Y., signifying the close union between the diocese and its chief shepherd.
At the top of Bishop Scharfenberger’s shield are three green triangles which represent mountains. The image has been found on arms belonging to the Scharfenberger family of antiquity. The original form was one mountain with an elk or a deer standing upon it.
Building on the family connection, the Diocese of Albany connects the Catskill and Adirondack mountain ranges. From a theological perspective, mountains have always been a special place of encounter with God; in the Old Testament, Mount Sinai was where Moses received the Law, and in the New Testament, Mount Tabor was the mount of the Transfiguration where Jesus revealed his glory. The Church is the third and central mountain which unites the faith and witness of both the Old and New Covenants.
The mountains are green, the color of hope, symbolizing the abundant life available through faith.
In the center portion of the shield, there is a Star of David, representing the bishop’s mother who was given the name Miriam at her baptism. The family, of Jewish origin, began in Kiev, Ukraine, and eventually moved to Dubuque, Iowa. Significantly, Kiev and Dubuque are both built alongside a river, as are Albany and Brooklyn.
To the viewer’s right, there are two white wavy lines with a blue line in the middle, a traditional way to depict water. These represent the rivers of the bishop’s life: the Dnieper; the Mississippi; the Hudson; the Mohawk; and the East Rivers. All flow into the sea, as all life flows into the Kingdom of God.
In the base of the shield is a gold feather, a reminder of the Holy Spirit and a connection to the Native American tribes of the Albany area, especially St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the Lily of the Mohawks. The feather has a long symbolic history going back to ancient Egypt, where the feather of Maat was the feather of truth and righteousness which often tipped the balance between salvation and condemnation.
Finally, the shield is complemented by the episcopal hat and cross and the scroll bearing the motto. The gallero was once the ordinary headgear of clerics. The color and number of tassels indicate the rank of the wearer. The color for bishops is green and has six tassels on each side. The cross behind the shield is a processional cross usually carried before the bishop in church worship services.
Bishop Scharfenberger’s motto, “Lord, make me a channel of your peace,” is taken from the prayer often attributed to St. Francis of Assisi.
