On January 24, 2026, the Most Rev. Josef Grünwidl (62) a priest of the Archdiocese of Vienna, Austria who has served, since 2025, as Administrator of the Archdiocese will be ordained and installed as the 33rd Archbishop of Vienna in succession to Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, OP, (81) a Dominican friar who served as Archbishop since 1995.
The armorial bearings assumed by Archbishop Grünwidl are typically, and wonderfully simple as are so many Austrian bishops’ coats of arms. It is also very common to quarter personal arms with those of the See in that part of the world. His chosen quarters marshal well with the beautifully simple arms of the See of Vienna.
His motto translates to: “Receive the melody of God”.
We wish him, Viel Glück und alles Gute! Ad Multos Annos!
